A Morning in Veliko Tarnovo’s Tsavarets Fortress

6 Jul

Yesterday morning we checked out the impressive Tsavarets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.  This massive medieval complex was the Bulgarian stronghold from the 12th century until the late 14th. In 1393 it was besieged and destroyed by Ottoman forces, although some buildings were restored during the communist years.

Nice view!

On “execution rock”

Hostel friends Matteo and Amelie climbing some old stairs

We used an unsafe ladder to get to the church

There were some excellent modern murals inside
